Parakeet Care for Beginners: Cage, Diet and Taming

Cage size and bar spacing
Wider beats taller — parakeets fly horizontally. Aim for at least 45cm of flight width per bird, with bar spacing under 1.3cm so heads cannot get stuck.
Use natural wood perches of varying diameter instead of uniform dowels to protect foot health.
Beyond the seed bowl
An all-seed diet is the leading cause of illness in pet budgies. Pellets should make up the base, with daily fresh greens and a little chopped vegetable on top.
- Offer millet as a training reward only, not a staple
- Change water twice daily — birds bathe in it
- Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine and non-stick fumes
Taming takes patience
Sit beside the cage and talk quietly for a few days before your hand goes in. Then rest a still hand inside, then offer millet, then ask for a step up. Rushing the sequence sets you back weeks.
