Reptile Terrarium Setup: Heat, Light, and Humidity Done Right

Think in gradients, not numbers

A healthy terrarium is never one temperature. Reptiles regulate their body heat by moving, so the enclosure needs a warm basking end and a cool end, letting the animal choose.

Measure both ends with separate digital thermometers. A single stick-on dial in the middle tells you almost nothing useful.

UVB is not optional for most species

Without UVB, a diurnal reptile cannot synthesise vitamin D3 and cannot absorb calcium — the root cause of metabolic bone disease, still the most common preventable illness we see.

UVB output falls long before the bulb stops glowing. Replace tubes on schedule, usually every six to twelve months.

• Mount UVB inside the enclosure, not above glass or plastic mesh that filters it
• Keep the basking spot at the distance the bulb manufacturer specifies
• Provide shade so the animal can escape UVB as well as heat

Humidity: species first, habits second

A crested gecko and a bearded dragon need almost opposite environments. Look up your exact species before buying substrate — the wrong bedding drives both respiratory infections and shedding problems.

A quick weekly check

Spot clean daily, check both temperatures and humidity weekly, and note shedding, appetite, and stool. Reptiles hide illness well, so written records catch problems earlier than memory does.
