Betta Fish Care: The Truth About Bowls, Heaters and Tank Mates
Bettas are tropical fish, not desk ornaments. Tank size, temperature, filtration and the tank mates that actually work.
Bowls are not enough
A betta needs a minimum of 19 litres, heated to 24–27°C and gently filtered. Unheated bowls cause lethargy, fin rot and short lifespans — the most common reason bettas 'only live a year'.
Cycle before you stock
Run the filter for several weeks with an ammonia source until ammonia and nitrite both read zero. Adding a fish to an uncycled tank is the single biggest beginner mistake.
- Gentle flow — bettas are poor swimmers in current
- Floating plants and a leaf hammock for resting
- Weekly 25% water change with dechlorinated water
Tank mates, carefully
Never house two male bettas together. In a larger planted tank, snails, shrimp and peaceful bottom dwellers usually work; fin-nipping tetras and anything long-finned do not.
