Flea and Tick Prevention for Dogs and Cats: A Safe Guide

Prevention is easier than an infestation

Fleas spend much of their life cycle in carpets, bedding, and floor gaps rather than on the pet. By the time you see adults, eggs and larvae may already be developing throughout the home. Consistent prevention interrupts that cycle before it grows.

Ticks can transmit disease and may stay active whenever temperatures are mild. The best schedule depends on climate, travel, wildlife exposure, and your pet's health.

Choose by species, weight, and lifestyle

Oral tablets, topical treatments, and collars differ in how quickly they work and which parasites they cover. Ask your veterinarian to recommend a product for your exact pet, especially for puppies, kittens, seniors, pregnant animals, or pets with seizures or chronic illness.

• Never use a dog flea product on a cat unless the label explicitly says it is safe
• Weigh your pet rather than guessing the dose range
• Record the product and date so doses are not repeated accidentally

Treat every pet and the environment

When fleas are present, every dog and cat in the household needs species-appropriate protection on the same schedule. Wash bedding hot, vacuum frequently, and empty the vacuum outside. Established infestations may take several months to fully clear as immature stages emerge.

Check for ticks after walks by feeling around ears, neck, toes, armpits, and groin. Remove an attached tick with fine-tipped tweezers, pulling steadily close to the skin.

Know when to seek help

Contact a veterinarian for pale gums, weakness, heavy flea burdens, skin infection, fever, joint pain, or behavior changes after a tick bite. If a pet trembles, drools, vomits, or becomes uncoordinated after a parasite product, wash off topical residue when safe and seek urgent veterinary advice.
