Cat Litter Box Problems: Why Cats Stop Using the Tray

Rule out pain before behaviour
Cystitis, crystals, kidney disease and arthritis all cause house soiling. If the change was sudden, if your cat strains, cries, or visits the tray often, see a vet before changing anything else.
The one-plus-one rule
Offer one tray per cat plus one spare, in separate rooms. Two trays side by side count as one location to a cat.
Most cats prefer a large, uncovered tray with 4–5 cm of soft, unscented clumping litter.
- Scoop twice a day, wash weekly with unscented soap
- Keep trays away from noisy appliances and food bowls
- Never place a tray where another pet can corner your cat
Cleaning up properly
Ordinary cleaners leave odour cues that invite repeat visits. Use an enzymatic cleaner made for pet accidents and avoid anything ammonia-based — it smells like urine to a cat.
